Sometimes, you just gotta force the issue, grab the archetypal patterns by the horns and hope you don’t get gored by them. My Vision Quest experience in the White Mountains of California in 1986 was inspired by the School of Lost Borders and the Book of the Vision Quest by Stephen Foster and Meredith Little, whose template I followed in planning and embarking on a three day fast and overnight vigil alone in the wild. This episode was a marker in my life, and consolidated and thrust in my face all the tensions, understandings, and resolutions I had up to that point. It remains to this day a luminous and deeply formative experience in the search, informed by a perhaps naïve, but pure and well-intended intensity and aspiration for Answers to my questions. I find it remarkable that some of these same Answers continue to inform and enlighten issues I have up to the current day – lessons about Aspiration, preparation, patience, and purity of heart.
