Jung, Campbell, Archetypes, and Mythic Journeys
The depth psychology of Carl Jung and the history and anthropology of world mythology as interpreted by Joseph Campbell confirm and bolster one another in unexpected ways.
The Deep Psyche’s Process
What’s in a label? John Weir Perry’s title for this mini-presentation may be mildly off-putting, but the content of this beautifully-delivered (and animated) talk captures and expresses the heart of the symbolic mythic journey brought to life, and questions whether “madness” in the eyes of the world lies in the supposed patient’s disordered imagery and symbolism, or in the world’s reified ego which banishes the deep psyche and forbids its content from rising to the surface and being integrated into conscious awareness. There are many similarities between the processes of so-called mental illness and the way-stages of healthy spiritual growth and evolution. Perhaps the main difference is, in the words of Perry, “if all goes right” or not.
