Malachi Eben Ha-Elijah is a latter-day Gnostic Christian Tau, or lineage holder for the Sophian Tradition of Gnostic Christianity. In Malachi’s words, a Tau is a gnostic apostle [or] gnostic master, and denotes a certain experience of realization, one who is the spiritual guide of the lineage in a generation. The word “gnosis” means “spiritual knowledge or insight into humanity’s real nature as divine” (Wikipedia), and a gnostic is one who subscribes to the notion that one must pursue knowledge (i.e. deeper awareness, not intellectual knowledge) inwardly; in essence, gnostics are mystics. Tau Malachi’s journey on the spiritual path began as a youngster, when he encountered a Tau of the Sophian Tradition of Gnostic Christianity, Tau Elijah Ben Miriam. He received the oral tradition of Sophian Gnosticism from Tau Elijah, and in due course became the Sophian lineage holder himself. He has been a student and practitioner of Gnostic Christianity for several decades. In 1983 he founded Sophia Fellowship as an expression of the tradition, and has been teaching and initiating others into Christian Gnosticism, Rosicrucian Philosophy, and the holy Kabbalah since that time. Today, the Fellowship is termed “Ecclesia Pistis Sophia” and considered by Tau Malachi, not a church, but a Gnostic Community – an association of people dedicated to the pursuit of a “spirituality of direct revelation, realization – direct spiritual and mystical experience; hence the Gnostic Path.”

We share many of the same essential points of faith with sisters and brothers in mainstream churches, but we tend to venture deeper into esoteric and metaphysical dimensions of the Gospel, and as much as viewing Christ as the Savior, we also view Christ as the Gnostic Revealer, a teacher of a path to self-realization or enlightenment. You might say we share advanced teachings of Christianity. We do have some views, beliefs, significantly different than those of mainstream Christianity, but we do not view differences as a conflict or contradiction – there is an outer, inner and secret Gospel, and for us the outer, inner and secret are completely interwoven. In our extended community … we have some members who attend other, mainstream churches, as well as being members of our gnostic church.

Tau Malachi is an initiate of Ordo Sanctus Gnosis, the formal exoteric name for the Sophian lineage. Along with his studies in the Western Mystery Tradition, Tau Malachi has studied extensively in several Eastern Traditions, such as Vajrayana Buddhism and Vedanta, as well as studying Native American traditions and practicing a Middle Eastern Tradition of Sufism. While Gnostic Christianity has always been his spiritual home, Malachi considers himself as a traveler and explorer of the Spirit and Truth wherever it may be found, and he exhibits profound knowledge and understanding of diverse Wisdom Traditions. I can personally attest to this, as in personal communications with me, he has shared extensive knowledge and conveyed understandings of mystic Hindu meditations, Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga, and Dzogchen Buddhism, in addition to his living embodiment of Gnostic Christianity.

Tau Malachi currently lives in California. He is the author of several books, including the following. All are highly recommended.
